Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer
w/ Sam Gleaves
5:30pm at Isis Music Hall
($15)

Two-time Grammy® Award Winners, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer celebrate their 45th recording, Get Up & Do Right. They are master musicians with a career spanning over 35 years. Their superb harmonies are backed by instrumental virtuosity on the guitar, five-string banjo, ukulele, mandolin, cello-banjo, and many other instruments. An eclectic folk festival on their own terms, their repertoire ranges from classic country to western swing, gypsy jazz to bluegrass, and old-time string band to contemporary folk including some original gems. Their versatility defies a brief description, perhaps “well rounded Americana” does it best. “As close to flawless folk/bluegrass as it gets.” — Billboard Magazine

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades
w/ Kitchen Dwellers
9:00pm at New Mountain AVL

Tickets now on sale

Dobro master and 14-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas is to the resonator guitar what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar: elevating, transforming, and reinventing the instrument in countless ways. In addition to being widely recognized as the foremost master of the Dobro, Jerry Douglas is a freewheeling, forward-thinking recording artist whose output incorporates elements of bluegrass, country, rock, jazz, blues and Celtic into his distinctive musical vision.

Tellico
9:00pm at Jack of the Wood
($5)

Tellico is the most recent product of Asheville NC's thriving roots music scene, its members well schooled in bluegrass but with an unbridled organic Appalachiacana sound. The band features the singing and songwriting of Anya Hinkle (guitar, fiddle, vocals) and Stig Stiglets (bass, vocals), formerly of Dehlia Low, with Aaron Ballance (also formerly of Dehlia Low) on dobro and lap steel and Jed Willis (formerly of Town Mountain, Wooden Toothe) on mandolin, clawhammer banjo and telecaster. Well known for their rootsy, authentic singing and vocal harmony, as well as in the hard-edge nostalgic yet modern themes of their songwriting, the quartet combines some of the finest voices, songs and instrumental prowess in western North Carolina and beyond.

The Claire Lynch Band
8:30pm at Isis Music Hall
($20)

Dolly Parton credits Claire with "one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today." Claire's harmonies have graced the recordings of many stellar musicians. Equally gifted as a songwriter, her songs have been recorded by The Seldom Scene, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea, Cherryholmes, The Whites and others. Blazing her own trail in the mid '70s when there were few role models for a young woman in the genre, Claire Lynch made history when she led the Front Porch String Band, which evolved in the '80s and '90s into “one of the sharpest and most exciting post-modern bluegrass bands on the circuit.” She formed The Claire Lynch Band in 2005.

Greensky Bluegrass
w/ Fruition
6:00pm at Salvage Station
($23 adv / $25 DOS)

The five members of Greensky Bluegrass have forged a defiant, powerful sound that, while rooted in classic stringband Americana, extends outwards with a fearless, exploratory zeal. The tension and release between these components – tradition and innovation, prearranged songs and improvisation, acoustic tones and electric volume – is what makes them so thrillingly dynamic, in concert and on record.

Mipso
w/ The Brothers Comatose & The Lil’ Smokies
9:00pm at The Orange Peel
(18+, $16 adv / $19 DOS)

While the instrumentation on the acclaimed Dark Holler Pop embraced North Carolina’s bluegrass heritage head-on, Old Time Reverie finds Mipso shifting their focus away from bluegrass, introducing new instruments and textures to create a distinctly different sound. Clawhammer banjo out of 1920s early country music meets atmospheric electric organ (played by Josh Oliver of The Everybodyfields) more native to 1970s pop. Add imaginative songwriting and a group cohesion gained from two years of near constant touring, and the resulting sound is powerfully rhythmic, lyrically sharp, and woven with beautiful four-part harmonies.
