John Butler Trio
w/ Landon McNamara at The Meadow (Highland Brewing) OUTDOOR SHOW
6:30pm at The Orange Peel
($30 adv / $35 DOS)

There are dirty Stevie Wonder-style boogies, ghostly refrains that could come from Simon and Garfunkel, sonic poltergeists which seem, at times, to resemble lost rock classics. In the hands of a lesser man this would be mere thievery dressed up as ‘eclecticism’. But Butler is a maestro – he takes his influences and transcends them. He creates a sound that is as ancient as aboriginal bone-art and yet as modern as your Twitter feed. He has been hailed as one of the world’s greatest guitarists, a musician’s musician, one whose sound offers not three chords and the truth but a thousand.

The Volt per Octaves
Farewell Show” w/ The Volt Per Octaves, Cyboman & Jason Daniello
7:00pm at The Mothlight

Consisting of husband and wife team Nick and Anna Montoya, along with their daughter Eva, the trio set out to bring Moog synthesizers back into the spotlight. In a day and age where multi-gigabyte samplers and laptop computers were ruling the electronic music scene, The VPOs have always been adamant about performing their original electronic music sans laptop. Bob Moogs vision was for his his instruments to be used in live performance to create sounds that were like no other sounds that came before! The name they chose The Volt per Octaves (or The Volt/Octs) is a direct reference to the genius of Dr. Robert A. Moog, inventor of the Moog synthesizer.

Hurray For The Riff Raff
w/ Xenia Rubinos
9:00pm at The Orange Peel
(18+, $18 adv / $20 DOS)

For her band's latest recording, Alynda Segarra drew early inspiration from cult favorite Rodriguez, a Mexican-American who translated working-class stories from Detroit into powerful rock ballads, and the Ghetto Brothers, an underground band from the 1970s South Bronx who stitched Puerto Rican nationalist messages into a rough-hewn fabric of Santana and Sly and the Family Stone Afro-Caribbean funk. She reached back to her cultural ancestors in the form of the radical political group the Young Lords and the salsa singer Héctor Lavoe.

of Montreal
w/ Showtime Goma & Nancy Feast
9:00pm at The Grey Eagle
($15 adv / $18 DOS)

The band's 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up '60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GA's Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl.

9:00pm at The Orange Peel
(18+, $20 adv / $22 DOS)

THUNDERCAT is the alter ego of virtuosic bassist / singer Stephen Bruner. Bruner found his instrument at the age of 4. That made him a late-bloomer in the house of Ronald, Sr., who drummed with the Temptations among others. His first bass was a black Harmony, and he practiced to the Ninja Turtles soundtrack until pops played him Jaco Pastorius. He joined thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies as a teenager, and spent road and studio time with everyone from Stanley Clarke to Snoop Dogg to Erykah Badu. Eventually the name Thundercat stuck, a reference to the cartoon he’s loved since childhood and an extension of Bruner’s wide-eyed, vibrant, often superhuman approach to his craft.
