David Cook
w/ Kathryn Dean
8:00pm at The Grey Eagle
($20 / $70 VIP)

When David Cook moved to Nashville in 2012, the expectation was that this singer-songwriter from the Heartland would emphasize the rootsy side of his sensibility, and sure enough, he had immediate success co-writing country tunes, including the Top-20 single “Kiss You Tonight” for David Nail in 2014. But new album Digital Vein is something else entirely, with Cook’s powerful voice and dynamic guitar work knifing through vibrant soundscapes that boldly juxtapose man-made grooves and electronic textures.

Strongly inspired by the American Primitive guitarists – John Fahey, Glenn Jones and Jack Rose – Isasa plays acoustic guitar and weissenborn in an organic, serene and meditative style. His music is a relaxed and unhurried experience for the listener. It projects a spiritual and twilight beauty.

Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble
w/ Art Feynman
9:00pm at The Mothlight
($12 adv / $14 DOS)

The Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble manages to strike new chords while touching familiar keys in the song of life. Laetitia has relentlessly followed her music through different dynamics and into a variety of dimensions over the course of four solo albums since 2010 (not to forget her three albums with Monade and the long era of Stereolab) — but the nature of the construction here stands distinctly apart from her recent albums. Laetitia was inspired by a mind’s-eye envisaging of geometric forms and their possible permutations. As she sought to replicate the shapes in music, this guided the process of assembly for her newest work. When we hear synth lines diving, lifting and drifting, unusual guitar textures, the plucked sound of flat wound bass strings or the bottomless pulsing of bass pedals stepping out of the mix with an exquisite vibrancy, this is the sound of the Source Ensemble.

Lucy Dacus
w/ Molly Burch
9:30pm at The Mothlight
($10 adv / $12 DOS)

Dacus started playing around Richmond while in college, opening for local acts and eventually meeting Jacob Blizard, a guitarist who invited her to make a record for a college project of his. No Burden, which originally came out in February on the Richmond label EggHunt Records, opens with the forthright, almost brutally honest "I Don't Wanna Be Funny Anymore," the last song Dacus wrote before the album's day-long recording session at Starstruck Studios in Nashville. Dacus delivers scalpel-sharp observations about resisting pigeonholing over chunky guitars, ticking off ideals of femininity and youth until the track's not-quite-resolution.

John Butler Trio
w/ Landon McNamara at The Meadow (Highland Brewing) OUTDOOR SHOW
6:30pm at The Orange Peel
($30 adv / $35 DOS)

There are dirty Stevie Wonder-style boogies, ghostly refrains that could come from Simon and Garfunkel, sonic poltergeists which seem, at times, to resemble lost rock classics. In the hands of a lesser man this would be mere thievery dressed up as ‘eclecticism’. But Butler is a maestro – he takes his influences and transcends them. He creates a sound that is as ancient as aboriginal bone-art and yet as modern as your Twitter feed. He has been hailed as one of the world’s greatest guitarists, a musician’s musician, one whose sound offers not three chords and the truth but a thousand.

Bill Frisell Harmony : Two Shows one Night
Shows at 7pm and 9pm
7:00pm at Isis Music Hall
($30 Advance / $35 Day of Show)

"It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he’s found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness." – The New York Times
