Sweet Knives
w/ The Missing Stares & The Chickenhawks
9:30pm at The Mothlight
($8)

In 2005 Memphis black-wave synth punk band Lost Sounds called it quits after being kicked out of a house in Stuttgart in the middle of a long long night. With that, four albums and numerous singles and outtakes releases were leftover, and the brutal live show would never happen again. As Jay Reatard (½ of the Lost Sounds songwriting team with Alicja Trout) continued to grow his hopeful career on Matador Records the other band members moved on down less-publicised roads. Rich Crook, drummer of Lost Sounds, formed Lover! and THING and toured as singer/guitar player. Alicja toured with River City Tanlines, Black Sunday, Mouserocket, and released solo recordings as Alicja-pop. Meanwhile time was healing the wounds that had caused the band break-up. Sadly Jay’s light died in January 2010. Alicja, Rich, and original member John Garland have brought back a set of tunes from the old Lost Sounds closet. Along with Johnny Valiant on bass they are called Sweet Knives, named after a song from the Lost Sounds 2004 In The Red “Future Touch” seven song EP. Lost Sounds was known for a sound filled with angst, paranoia, and anxiety all rolled up in a synth laden rock n roll tasty burrito. Sweet Knives carries on the quest with a new delivery, less likely to fall apart and fall off stage, and more likely to infect a room with a symphony of sharpened blades.

The Goddamn Gallows
w/ Skunk Ruckus
9:00pm at The Grey Eagle
($12 adv / $15 DOS)

The Goddamn Gallows came from the heart of America's Rust Belt, arising from a night of flophouse violence. Drifting across the states, they cemented their sound in Portland and later in Los Angeles, where they lived in abandoned buildings, squatter camps, storage units and shoebox apartments. In 2007, they left everything behind and spent the next 4 years living out of whatever vehicle would get them to the next town. Building upon their original sound of "twanged-out, punk rock gutterbilly", they began picking up stray musicians along the way - washboard, accordion, mandolin and banjo - creating a sound referred to as "hobocore", "gypsy-punk" or "americana-punk", while never being stuck in any one sound.

Roky Erickson
w/ Death Valley Girls
9:00pm at The Grey Eagle
($22 adv / $25 DOS)
Tickets now on sale

Legendary rock n roll pioneer Roger Kynard "Roky" Erickson hails from Austin, Texas. He is, in the words of music writer Richie Unterberger, one of "the unknown heroes of rock and roll." As singer, songwriter, and guitar player for the legendary Austin, TX band The 13th Floor Elevators, the first rock and roll band to describe their music as "psychedelic", Roky had a profound impact on the San Francisco scene when the group traveled there in 1966. While bands such as The Grateful Dead and The Jefferson Airplane had the their roots in traditional acoustic folk music, the Elevators unique brand of heavy, hard-rocking electric blues pointed to a new direction for the music of the hippie generation.

of Montreal
w/ Showtime Goma & Nancy Feast
9:00pm at The Grey Eagle
($15 adv / $18 DOS)

The band's 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up '60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GA's Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl.

Over the last three decades, J Mascis’ songwriting has continued to pursue confusion, isolation and mis-communication as its main themes (which is one of the reasons he’s always been the artist-of-choice for so many misfits), but he has really worked on the craft of songwriting, and he’s constantly improving his ability to convey these feelings rather than merely inhabit them.
