Pulp is open every night there is a show, and a live feed is piped in to allow patrons to view and listen to the show occurring upstairs. Pulp is also open various other nights for events featuring local artists and “Slice of Life” open-mic comedy nights.

Hellyeah
w/ Kyng & Cane Hill
at The Orange Peel
($23 adv / $28 DOS / $99 Silver VIP / $149 Gold VIP)

Heavy metal “supergroup” Hellyeah formed in 2006 in Dallas, Texas around the talents of Mudvayne’s Chad Gray (vocals) and Greg Tribbett (guitar), Nothingface’s Tom Maxwell (guitar) and Jerry Montano — the latter also played with Danzig — and Pantera/Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. The group’s self-titled debut was released in April 2007 on Epic Records. Shortly after the album was released, Montano left the band and was replaced by Damageplan bassist Bob Zilla. With a new bassist in place, Hellyeah began to work on new material, and in 2010 released their sophomore album, Stampede. Released in 2012, the Eleven Seven Music-issued Band of Brothers found success on the strength of the singles “War in Me” and the propulsive title cut, and 2014’s Blood for Blood saw the band part ways with Tribett and Zilla, the latter of whom was replaced by Bloodsimple bass player Kyle Sanders. In 2016 the band issued its fifth studio long-player, the brooding and savage Unden!able, which included a blistering cover of Phil Collins’ “I Don’t Care Anymore” that featured guitar parts from late Pantera shredder Dimebag Darrell.

With influences ranging from bluegrass to classical, Amon Amarth to ZZ Top, and everything in between, they’re out to bring our their brand of “brootality” to anyone that lends an open ear.

John Butler Trio
w/ Landon McNamara at The Meadow (Highland Brewing) OUTDOOR SHOW
at The Orange Peel
($30 adv / $35 DOS)

There are dirty Stevie Wonder-style boogies, ghostly refrains that could come from Simon and Garfunkel, sonic poltergeists which seem, at times, to resemble lost rock classics. In the hands of a lesser man this would be mere thievery dressed up as ‘eclecticism’. But Butler is a maestro – he takes his influences and transcends them. He creates a sound that is as ancient as aboriginal bone-art and yet as modern as your Twitter feed. He has been hailed as one of the world’s greatest guitarists, a musician’s musician, one whose sound offers not three chords and the truth but a thousand.

Hurray For The Riff Raff
w/ Xenia Rubinos
at The Orange Peel
(18+, $18 adv / $20 DOS)

For her band’s latest recording, Alynda Segarra drew early inspiration from cult favorite Rodriguez, a Mexican-American who translated working-class stories from Detroit into powerful rock ballads, and the Ghetto Brothers, an underground band from the 1970s South Bronx who stitched Puerto Rican nationalist messages into a rough-hewn fabric of Santana and Sly and the Family Stone Afro-Caribbean funk. She reached back to her cultural ancestors in the form of the radical political group the Young Lords and the salsa singer Héctor Lavoe.

Thundercat
at The Orange Peel
(18+, $20 adv / $22 DOS)

THUNDERCAT is the alter ego of virtuosic bassist / singer Stephen Bruner. Bruner found his instrument at the age of 4. That made him a late-bloomer in the house of Ronald, Sr., who drummed with the Temptations among others. His first bass was a black Harmony, and he practiced to the Ninja Turtles soundtrack until pops played him Jaco Pastorius. He joined thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies as a teenager, and spent road and studio time with everyone from Stanley Clarke to Snoop Dogg to Erykah Badu. Eventually the name Thundercat stuck, a reference to the cartoon he’s loved since childhood and an extension of Bruner’s wide-eyed, vibrant, often superhuman approach to his craft.

Over the last three decades, J Mascis’ songwriting has continued to pursue confusion, isolation and mis-communication as its main themes (which is one of the reasons he’s always been the artist-of-choice for so many misfits), but he has really worked on the craft of songwriting, and he’s constantly improving his ability to convey these feelings rather than merely inhabit them.
